This fellowship opportunity is offered by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) under the NRC Research Associateship Programs. It supports research on two cutting-edge gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection instruments: Glowbug and StarBurst.
Glowbug is a gamma-ray burst experiment deployed on the International Space Station (ISS) in March 2023. It has an effective area comparable to the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor and uses a novel spatially coherent burst detection algorithm, making it highly sensitive to short GRBs, which are expected electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave events.
StarBurst is a free-flying instrument currently under construction, designed to have three times the effective area of the Fermi GBM. It leverages Glowbug technology to enable rapid development and early launch. StarBurst aims to extend the detection reach for electromagnetic signals from neutron star mergers observed by next-generation gravitational wave observatories.
Applicants will engage in a variety of research activities including:
This fellowship is ideal for researchers interested in both instrumentation development and gamma-ray burst astrophysics.
