This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) focuses on developing novel sintering techniques—specifically Environmentally-Controlled Pressure-Assisted Sintering (EC-PAS)—to fabricate fully dense nanomaterials from nanoparticle (NP) and core-shell NP building blocks. The research aims to precisely control the functional properties of solid monolithic materials by preserving the nanostructure and core-shell architecture of the particles throughout the densification process. This retention leads to unique combinations of properties and performance that surpass those of traditional microcrystalline materials.
The approach involves maintaining the size and structure of initial nanoparticles in the fully dense solid and forming an extensive network of interfacial regions (grain boundaries) linked to the nanoparticle design. Key research areas include nanopowders, nanosintering, nanoceramics, and nanocomposites.
