    Description

This fellowship opportunity at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) focuses on applying measurement science to medical images of lung tumors, specifically pulmonary nodules. The goal is to develop lung tumor measurement techniques that are independent of varying operating conditions such as different CT machines, operators, times of day, and patient positioning. Accurate measurement of tumor size changes over time is critical for assessing malignancy and growth rate.

The research involves two main projects:

    • Developing a fully automated volumetric measurement technique that requires no user input parameters.
    • Creating standardized lung tumor data sets by embedding known geometric objects (synthetic tumors) into clinical lung tumor images. These data sets will simulate real-world complications such as noise, vascular structures, and pleural lung linings to serve as benchmarks for testing measurement techniques.

This research aims to improve the accuracy, reproducibility, and standardization of lung tumor measurements in medical imaging.
