    Description

This fellowship opportunity, offered by the NRC Research Associateship Programs at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), focuses on advancing the fundamental and applied science of lithium-ion batteries to enhance their performance, safety, and reliability. The research aims to understand and mitigate chemical and materials degradation processes that lead to battery instability and failure.

    Key research areas include:

    • In-situ experimental techniques to observe passivation layer chemistry and identify chemical processes causing instability.
    • Development of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy-based diagnostics to detect chemical degradation inside lithium-ion batteries.
    • Investigation of nanoscale coatings on oxide and silicon-based electrode materials to improve battery durability and safety.
    • Use of in-situ optical microscopy to study lithium plating and dendrite nucleation, formation, and growth.

Applicants from diverse academic backgrounds with expertise relevant to battery science, electrochemistry, materials science, and diagnostics are encouraged to apply.
