--- ## Description The AAAS Philip Hauge Abelson Prize is an annual honor awarded by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the scientific community in the United States. Established in 1985, the prize recognizes achievements in research, science policy, and/or civil service, with a focus on leadership and sustained impact that advances science for societal benefit. Recipients receive a $5,000 monetary award, a commemorative plaque, complimentary AAAS membership and annual meeting registration, and reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses to attend the award ceremony. --- ## Due Dates - June 2026 (nominations deadline; nominations open April 15 – June 30 each year, anticipated/projected) *All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates.* --- ## Funding Amount - $5,000 cash prize - Commemorative plaque - Complimentary registration to the AAAS Annual Meeting - Complimentary one-year AAAS membership - Reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses to attend the award ceremony --- ## Eligibility - The nominee must have made significant and sustained contributions to the scientific community in the United States. - Eligible nominees include public servants, scientists, or individuals in any field who have provided exceptional service or leadership in research, policy, and/or civil service. - Nominations may be submitted by individuals, universities, government agencies, research organizations, and AAAS affiliate organizations. - Self-nominations are permitted. - Prior nominees may be resubmitted in subsequent years (updated materials required). - All nomination materials must be submitted in English. - Awardees must meet commonly held standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity. --- ## Application Process - Nominations must be submitted via the [AAAS Abelson Prize nomination portal](https://abelson.secure-platform.com/a). - Required materials: - Nominator’s and nominee’s contact information (name, title, institution, email, phone) - A brief citation (25–30 words) describing the nominee’s accomplishments - A statement (up to three pages) detailing the rationale for the nomination - At least one (up to two) letter(s) of support addressing the nominee’s eligibility and impact - The nominee’s CV or resume (up to five pages) - (Optional) Demographic information of the nominator - All materials become the property of AAAS. --- ## Additional Information - Nominations are evaluated based on: 1. Significant and lasting impacts advancing science for the benefit of society 2. Exceptional leadership in science, policy, and/or civil service 3.
