The Abandoned Mine Drainage Abatement and Treatment Program (AMDATP) supports efforts to address the significant problem of abandoned mine drainage (AMD) in Pennsylvania. AMD is a leading cause of stream impairment, affecting over 5,500 miles of waterways within the state. This grant program funds projects focused on the reclamation of abandoned mine wells, construction and repair of AMD remediation sites, ongoing operation and maintenance of treatment systems, establishment of trust funds for long-term upkeep, and water quality monitoring to assess remediation effectiveness. Priority is given to projects that abate or treat AMD, including those that enable the use of treated AMD in oil and gas development or that deploy new technologies or research methods for AMD reduction.
