NSF BIO supports research combining biology and AI/ML to advance biological discovery or develop AI/ML methods inspired by biological systems, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration.
Funder: U.S. National Science Foundation
Due Dates: September 17, 2024 (BIO Directorate proposals encouraged)
Funding Amounts: Typical NSF BIO research grants; award size and duration vary by program.
Summary: Supports research at the intersection of biology and AI/ML, encouraging collaborative projects that advance biological discovery or develop AI/ML methods informed by biological systems.
Key Information: Proposals must be submitted to existing NSF BIO solicitations and follow standard guidelines.
This opportunity encourages proposals that advance biological research through the application or development of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) methods, or that use biological data and systems to inform new AI/ML approaches. The NSF Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) seeks to address grand challenge problems in biology by leveraging AI/ML to analyze, synthesize, and integrate complex datasets, develop predictive models, and inspire bio-inspired innovations. Proposals may focus on implementing existing AI/ML tools for biological questions, developing new AI/ML models for biological insights, or validating AI/ML results against traditional approaches.
Collaborative projects between biologists and AI/ML experts are especially encouraged. Activities such as generating publicly available datasets, creating open-source tools, and workforce training in AI/ML for biological applications are welcomed. Proposals solely aimed at generating new data are discouraged.
This is not a special competition or new program; proposals should be submitted to existing NSF BIO solicitations and must align with the goals and requirements of those programs.
