Description
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Southwest Biological Science Center is offering a cooperative agreement for a partner within the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) Program. The goal is to advance research in developing gridded, management-relevant rangeland drought forecasts and improve delivery platforms for resource managers across western U.S. rangelands. The project will:
- Develop wall-to-wall, monthly weather and soil moisture forecasts using real-time National Weather Service data, producing continuously updated forecast maps for near-term soil drought and seed establishment probabilities.
- Synthesize peer-reviewed information about the establishment requirements—especially soil moisture needs—of critical restoration species, to inform managers on optimal timing and location for restoration efforts.
This effort targets improved restoration outcomes in the face of wildfire and invasive species, supporting federal priorities related to wildfire management, habitat restoration, sustainable energy, and science-driven management decisions.
