The Agricultural Land Mitigation Program (ALMP) provides grant funding for the acquisition of agricultural conservation easements on farmland in specific California counties (Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, and Tulare). The program’s goal is to permanently protect farmland classified as Prime Farmland, Farmland of Statewide Importance, Farmland of Local Importance, or Unique Farmland, as identified by the California Department of Conservation’s Farmland Mapping and Monitoring Program. Grants are awarded to cover up to 100% of the easement value, ensuring that high-quality agricultural land remains in production and is not converted to non-agricultural uses.
Eligible landowners must partner with a qualified applicant (such as a land trust, city, county, resource conservation district, or regional park/open-space district) to apply. The program is particularly relevant for landowners impacted by infrastructure projects, such as high-speed rail, but is open to all eligible properties within the target counties.
