This fellowship opportunity supports research on turbulent fluxes of momentum and temperature at the air-sea interface, focusing on how these fluxes are influenced by realistic wind-wave conditions. The research involves conducting and analyzing laboratory measurements complemented by high-resolution non-hydrostatic numerical simulations. The ideal candidate will have experience or interest in Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), oceanographic microstructure instrumentation (temperature, shear), and boundary layer dynamics. Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical modeling is a plus.
Additional research themes in the host lab include fiber-optics based sensors for temperature and flow measurements, and bio-inspired engineering approaches to reduce boundary layer turbulence and drag, inspired by mechanisms such as shark skin and dolphin skin.
The research is conducted at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) located at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, within the Ocean Sciences division.
