Description
This funding opportunity from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under NIH supports the Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Interdisciplinary Research Units (CARBIRUs). The goal is to fund multidisciplinary, collaborative research programs focused on discovery to early development research that informs new strategies to prevent, diagnose, and treat infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Antibacterial resistance is a critical global health threat, with millions affected annually and tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S. alone. This program aims to address key knowledge gaps by fostering synergistic teams of investigators from diverse scientific disciplines to accelerate fundamental research and translation into novel countermeasures.
Research Scope and Objectives
- Support multi-component programs organized around a unifying theme or hypotheses related to antibiotic resistance.
- Encourage innovative, synergistic research activities from discovery through early development.
- Exclude preclinical development of well-characterized lead candidates (covered by other programs).
- Target bacterial pathogens of public health concern, including:
- Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales
- ESBL-producing Enterobacterales
- Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii
- Multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE)
- Drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Clostridioides difficile

- Discovery and characterization of bacterial and host factors in infection and resistance.
- Mechanistic studies of antibiotic resistance and treatment failure.
- Identification and validation of novel drug targets and early drug screening.

- Development of rapid, sensitive diagnostics.

Program Structure
- Administrative Core: Oversees program coordination, progress monitoring, and administration.
- Research Projects: Minimum of two and maximum of four projects per program, aligned with the central theme.
- Scientific Core(s): Optional, up to three cores supporting at least two projects each.
- Annual programmatic meetings to foster collaboration among funded units.
Collaboration and Team Composition
- Multidisciplinary teams with complementary expertise (e.g., microbiology, immunology, genetics, biochemistry, structural biology, computational biology, clinical medicine).
- Teams may be from single or multiple institutions.
- Encouraged to collaborate across CARBIRU programs.
