The Folger Shakespeare Library's Artistic Research Fellowships provide support for artists whose creative work would benefit from in-depth research related to the histories, concepts, art, and objects of the early modern world (circa 1400–1800) and its legacies. Fellows gain access to the Folger’s extensive collections—including rare materials, visual art, and theatre history—and may pursue their research onsite in Washington, DC, virtually, or through a hybrid arrangement. The program values experimentation, interdisciplinary inquiry, and projects that address marginalized subjects or propose more inclusive historical narratives. A final art deliverable is not required, but fellows must complete a post-fellowship evaluation.
