--- ## Description The Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) offers Postdoctoral Research Fellowships to highly qualified early-career investigators. These fellowships support independent research and professional development in atmospheric and geospace sciences, aiming to broaden recipients' perspectives, facilitate interdisciplinary interactions, and help establish future leaders in these fields. Fellows may conduct research at any appropriate U.S. host institution of their choice, and the award is made to the individual, not the institution. --- ## Due Dates - Proposals are accepted at any time; there are no fixed deadlines. - Awardees must begin the fellowship within 6 months of notification of award. --- ## Funding Amount - Typical award: $190,000 per fellowship over up to 2 years (approx. $94,000 in year 1, $96,000 in year 2). - Includes a stipend ($65,000 in year 1, $67,000 in year 2) and a $29,000 annual fellowship allowance. - Estimated total program funding: $1,500,000 per year. - Expected number of awards: approximately 8 annually. --- ## Eligibility - **Citizenship:** U.S. citizens (or nationals) or legally admitted permanent residents at the time of proposal submission. - **Career stage:** Must be either: - A current graduate student, - Have held a PhD in a scientific or engineering field for no more than 2 years at the time of submission, or - Have had no more than 18 months of full-time employment since PhD conferral (those with >2 years since PhD but <18 months employment must include a statement affirming eligibility). - **Research area:** Proposed research must fall within the scope of the Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences ([see AGS programs](https://www.nsf.gov/div/index.jsp?div=ags)). - **Host institution:** Any appropriate U.S. institution; special justification and additional mentorship requirements apply if the fellowship is held at the institution where the PhD was earned or the current institution. - **Proposal restrictions:** Only individuals may apply; proposals are submitted by the applicant, not by the host institution. No more than two proposals to this program per individual (lifetime limit). No concurrent submission of identical proposals to other NSF or federal programs. - **Mentorship:** Each applicant must identify at least one sponsoring scientist and host institution. Additional mentorship requirements apply in some cases. --- ## Application Process - **Submission:** Proposals must be submitted directly by the individual applicant via [NSF FastLane](https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/fastlane.jsp) or [Grants.gov](https://www.grants.gov/web/grants/applicants/registration.html). - **Registration:** Applicants must register as individuals in NSF systems. - **Required documents:** - Project summary and description (including research and professional development plans) - Justification of host institution and mentorship plan - Biographical sketch (with eligibility affirmation if required) - Letters of collaboration from host institution(s) and mentors - Budget and budget justification - Data management plan - Current and pending support - Facilities, equipment, and other resources statement - **Review criteria:** Proposals are evaluated on intellectual merit, broader impacts, applicant qualifications, mentorship plan, and the fit of the research within AGS priorities. - **Award administration:** Fellows are responsible for managing their own award; the fellowship is not administered by the host institution. --- ## Additional Information - **Tracks:** Applicants may propose research aligned with either the Geospace or Atmospheric science tracks as defined by AGS. - **Host institution restrictions:** Some federal centers (e.g., NCAR for Atmospheric Track) are ineligible as host institutions. - **Fellowship conditions:** No additional appointments or fellowships may be held concurrently.
