The Berlin Prize is a prestigious, semester-long residential fellowship awarded annually by the American Academy in Berlin to approximately two dozen individuals who demonstrate excellence in the arts, humanities, social sciences, law, journalism, and public policy. Fellows pursue independent projects at the Hans Arnhold Center in Berlin, engaging with German audiences through lectures, readings, performances, and public discussions. The program aims to foster cultural and intellectual exchange between the United States and Germany, with a strong emphasis on professional networking, public engagement, and transatlantic dialogue. Projects addressing contemporary issues such as democracy, technology (including artificial intelligence), China, climate change, and sustainability are particularly encouraged. Dedicated fellowships are also available in Jewish studies, German studies, and public health/biotechnology.
