This annual fellowship, jointly hosted by the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), supports new scholarship on Native art of the United States. The program prioritizes research that centers Indigenous methodologies, knowledges, and communities, and provides recipients with access to the extensive collections, archives, and research staff of both museums. The fellowship can be awarded as a 12-month predoctoral residency or as a 9-month postdoctoral/senior appointment. Fellows will engage in scholarly exchange, participate in workshops and symposia, and are expected to collaborate with Indigenous artists, knowledge holders, and communities as part of their research.
