--- ## Description This opportunity from Breakthrough T1D aims to accelerate research that improves the early detection and accurate diagnosis of adult-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D). The grant specifically targets gaps in understanding the unique disease mechanisms, immune activation, islet pathology, biomarker validation, misdiagnosis, and epidemiology of T1D in adults. Projects should distinguish adult-onset T1D from type 2 diabetes, explore adult-specific immune and clinical features, and leverage existing datasets and biobanks for validation. The ultimate goal is to inform the development of better diagnostic tools, management strategies, and regulatory guidelines to enhance care and outcomes for adults with or at risk for T1D. --- ## Due Dates - Letter of Intent (LOI) deadline: **June 10, 2025** - Full application deadline: **July 17, 2025** - Notification of LOI outcome: June 20, 2025 - Award notification: December 2025 - Earliest anticipated project start: February 2026 --- ## Funding Amount - Maximum budget: **Up to $900,000 total costs per project (including up to 10% indirect costs for nonprofit institutions)** - Project duration: **Up to 3 years** - For-profit applicants: No indirect costs permitted; additional requirements and possible royalty payback may apply (see IDDP mechanism). - Larger budgets or longer timelines may be considered with strong justification—contact Breakthrough T1D before applying. --- ## Eligibility - **Who can apply:** - Domestic and foreign nonprofit organizations (universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, eligible government units, agencies). - For-profit entities and industry-academic collaborations (contact Breakthrough T1D before applying). - **Applicant requirements:** - Must hold an M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M., D.O., Ph.D., or equivalent degree. - Must have a faculty or equivalent position at an eligible institution. - For clinical studies: Must hold an appointment in a clinical subspecialty and conduct human clinical research. - **Other:** - No citizenship restrictions. - Diversity encouraged: Applications from underrepresented groups, women, and persons with disabilities are welcomed. --- ## Application Process - **Letter of Intent (LOI):** - Required for all applicants; maximum 2 pages. - Submit online via [RMS360](https://breakthrought1d.smartsimple.us/). - Must use the provided LOI template. - **Full Proposal:** - By invitation only, after LOI approval. - Use provided templates (maximum 10 pages, single-spaced, 10-point font). - Include all required information; human subject research proposals must follow NIH and Common Rule guidelines. - **Funding mechanisms:** - Strategic Research Agreements (SRA) for nonprofits (with indirects). - Industry Development and Discovery Program (IDDP) for for-profits (no indirects; royalty payback may apply). - **Informational webinar:** - May 13, 2025, 11am ET.
