The Black Visual Arts Archives initiative, led by the Getty Foundation, aims to expand awareness of the contributions of Black artists by supporting the activation and enhancement of access to archival collections in the United States. The program addresses the challenge that many records of Black visual arts are dispersed, under-processed, or difficult to discover. Funded projects may include surveying, processing, rehousing, and digitizing archival materials, as well as developing public programming, exhibitions, digital projects, and training for staff or community members. The initiative also encourages knowledge sharing and community building among grantees to foster new insights and opportunities to celebrate Black visual arts history.
