The California Sea Grant State Fellowship Program provides post-graduate students with a unique opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in coastal and marine resource policy, management, and research within California. Modeled after the Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, this program matches highly motivated graduate students and recent graduates with municipal, state, and federal agencies, as well as research and conservation organizations, all working on California’s coastal and marine issues. Fellows work full-time for 12 months alongside host mentors, gaining practical policy experience and professional development, while hosts benefit from the fellows’ expertise and support.
Fellows are expected to contribute meaningfully to their host offices, engage with staff and leadership, and participate in optional extension projects. The program emphasizes training the next generation of ocean and coastal leaders to address California’s dynamic environmental challenges.
