The American Heart Association’s Career Development Award supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals in the early years of their first professional appointment. Its purpose is to help applicants build successful careers as research scientists in cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular disease. The award combines support for disease-focused research with an emphasis on the investigator’s professional development and future success.
The American Heart Association runs the award as part of its research funding portfolio. It is the largest nonprofit, nongovernmental funder of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular research in the United States, supporting basic, clinical, population and data science research. Applicants need not work in a cardiovascular- or cerebrovascular-oriented laboratory, clinic or department, but the project’s relationship to cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease or brain health is an important consideration.
