Funder: National Institutes of Health
Due Dates: June 16, 2025 (New) | July 16, 2025 (Renewal/Resubmission/Revision) | October 16, 2025 (New) | November 16, 2025 (Renewal/Resubmission/Revision) | Additional cycles through November 2027
Funding Amounts: Up to $225,000 direct costs/year; $450,000 direct costs total over 3 years; modular budget required; ~5 awards anticipated in FY25.
Summary: Supports fundamental research to understand skin injuries from chemical threats, focusing on shared mechanisms and therapeutic targets for medical countermeasures.
Key Information: Proposed studies must include at least two chemicals of concern (CoCs), one of which must be a vesicant; clinical trials are not allowed.
This opportunity supports fundamental research to advance the basic understanding of skin injuries caused by chemicals identified as public health threats, with a focus on identifying common mechanisms, signaling pathways, and potential therapeutic targets for the development of broadly effective medical countermeasures (MCMs). The initiative is part of the NIH Chemical Countermeasures Research Program (CCRP) and is specifically intended for investigators new to the chemical threats field, particularly those with expertise in skin injury and wound healing.
The program encourages research on the mechanisms of injury from multiple chemicals of concern (CoCs), including vesicants (e.g., sulfur mustard, Lewisite, phosgene oxime, arsenicals) and toxic industrial/corrosive chemicals (e.g., hydrochloric acid, oleum, nitric acid, chlorosulfuric acid). The goal is to foster new research directions and collaborations that will ultimately support the development of medical countermeasures for chemical threats.
This is a planning grant (R34 mechanism), designed to help investigators acquire new skills, establish collaborations, and generate preliminary data necessary for future, more comprehensive research projects in this area.
All applications are due by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization. See the NIH standard due dates for more details.
Eligible Organizations:
Ineligible:
Foreign components (as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement) are allowed.
Individual Eligibility: Any individual(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as PD/PI is invited to apply. This opportunity is intended for investigators who are not currently or previously supported by the CCRP (including CounterACT initiatives).
