--- ## Description This program supports theoretical, observational, and modeling studies that advance understanding of the processes forcing and regulating the atmosphere’s synoptic and planetary circulation, weather, and climate. Research areas include: - General circulation of the stratosphere and troposphere - Synoptic-scale weather phenomena - Climate-governing processes and climate variability/change - Climate prediction and extended weather predictability - Parameterization of physical processes in climate models - Numerical methods for large-scale weather and climate models - Assembly and analysis of instrumental or modeled weather and climate data - Data assimilation and climate model development for diagnosing and simulating climate and its variations The program encourages multidisciplinary proposals, especially those that intersect with ocean, ecological, hydrological, geographic, mathematical, and statistical sciences. Proposals spanning multiple NSF divisions may be co-reviewed, and should be submitted in accordance with any relevant deadlines for those programs. Proposals are welcomed from principal investigators (PIs) at all career stages and institution types, including Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), non-R1 institutions, and institutions in EPSCoR jurisdictions.
