Funds research that extends analysis and follow-up of existing breast cancer clinical studies to maximize scientific and clinical impact, without new trials or patient enrollment.
Funder: Military Health System Research Program
Due Dates (Anticipated): May 2026 (Letter of intent) | July 2026 (Full application)
Funding Amounts: Up to $7M (Single PI) or $8.4M (Partnering PI Option) total costs over 4 years
Summary: Supports research extending data collection, follow-up, and analysis of existing breast cancer clinical studies to maximize scientific and clinical impact without starting new trials or enrolling new patients.
Key Information: Two or more consumer advocates required on the research team; new clinical trials or new patient enrollment are not allowed.
This opportunity supports projects that extend the data collection, follow-up, and analysis of breast cancer clinical research studies, aiming to maximize the clinical and scientific value of existing patient cohorts. The award is designed to address knowledge gaps caused by early study termination, limited follow-up, or suboptimal sample/data collection. Potential research activities include deeper molecular analysis of clinical samples, new correlative studies, biomarker validation, or continued clinical follow-up of patients from ongoing or completed trials. The mechanism encourages hypothesis generation and the development of clinically annotated and molecularly characterized experimental platforms, such as patient-derived models or tissue arrays.
Critically, the award does not support the initiation of new clinical trials or the enrollment of new patients in existing studies. All applications must include two or more consumer advocates as part of the research team. A Partnering PI Option is available for collaborative, multi-investigator projects.
