Description
The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) Applied Science Program supports the development and application of innovative science and technology to address environmental challenges associated with coal mining and land reclamation. This program funds projects that improve public and environmental health protection by advancing reclamation science and technology.
Funded projects focus on activities such as:
- Protecting identified endangered species impacted by mining activities
- Enhancing reforestation and re-vegetation techniques
- Protecting prime farmland affected by mining operations
- Developing improved technologies to mitigate acid mine drainage
- Advancing methods for locating underground mines
- Enhancing public and environmental protection related to surface coal mining
The program aims to serve the public interest by promoting sustainable reclamation practices and mitigating adverse environmental impacts of coal mining.
