This cooperative agreement supports research projects aimed at improving the occupational safety of workers in the U.S. commercial fishing industry. The program, established under the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2010 and amended in 2014, is administered by the CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard. Projects may address a range of safety challenges, including vessel design, emergency and survival equipment, vessel monitoring systems, communication devices, de-icing technology, severe weather detection, and the development of new safety procedures or equipment.
The program seeks to reduce injuries, fatalities, and occupational hazards in commercial fishing through innovative research, technology development, and the evaluation of safety interventions. Projects should align with national strategic priorities such as Healthy People 2030 and the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) for Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing.
