Key Information: Preliminary proposal is required; full proposals accepted by invitation only.
This program funds large-scale, multi-institutional research projects in computer and information science and engineering that aim to catalyze transformative advances and define the future of the field. The initiative encourages collaborative teams to pursue bold, foundational research agendas that look a decade or more ahead and have the potential for disruptive innovations. Supported topics include, but are not limited to, new architectures for intelligence, theoretical and experimental advances in learning systems, robotics, next-generation networking, and other high-impact areas that require multidisciplinary expertise and cannot be addressed by a single discipline alone.
Expeditions projects are among the largest investments made by the NSF’s Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), reflecting the need for deep, sustained research efforts to achieve lasting breakthroughs. These grants are intended to foster environments that encourage creativity, risk-taking, and integration of diverse research contributions.
