The CPEP Clinical Fellowship, administered by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), is a nationally recognized two-year postgraduate training program designed to develop the next generation of directors for medical and public health laboratory microbiology and medical laboratory immunology laboratories. The fellowship delivers in-depth, hands-on training that combines clinical laboratory experience, research, laboratory management, epidemiology, public health, and laboratory safety. Fellows gain expertise in diagnostic bacteriology, virology, mycology, immunology, molecular diagnostics, and related areas, while also developing leadership and management skills essential for laboratory directorship roles.
Upon successful completion, fellows are eligible for board certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) or, for immunology, the Diplomate in Medical Laboratory Immunology (DMLI) exam, which are widely recognized credentials for laboratory directors in clinical and public health settings.
