--- ## Description The Don B. Daily Safety Grant, established by the Steel Manufacturers Association and the AIST Foundation, funds North American university teams to develop projects that promote safety and health awareness in the steel manufacturing industry. The grant aims to foster a safer workplace, enhance student engagement with safety topics, encourage direct student-industry interaction, and recruit students for steel industry careers. Projects should involve a strong partnership with a steel industry mentor and direct engagement with steel plants, and span up to one academic year. --- ## Due Dates - Proposal deadline: July 20, 2025 (for the 2025–2026 academic year) - Awardees announced by August --- ## Funding Amount - Maximum award: $20,000 per project - Project duration: Up to one academic year (September–August) - Number of grants awarded depends on available funds --- ## Eligibility - Open to teams from North American universities (students and professors) - Proposals must be submitted by a faculty member leading a team of undergraduate students - Each project must involve an industry mentor from a steel-producing company - Universities may submit multiple proposals (each must be unique and submitted separately) - No overhead or indirect costs allowed --- ## Application Process 1. **Prepare Proposal (max 10 pages):** - Project name, submission date, funding request, grant type (new/ongoing/multi-year) - Team lead details (professor(s), department, contact info) - Team members (student names/majors/roles) - Industry mentor details and letter of support - Executive summary (challenge, solution, relevance to steel safety/health) - Project plan (goals, methodology, deliverables, steel industry engagement) - Timeline (tasks, phases, milestones) - Budget breakdown (including any stipends for faculty/students) - Description of student participation and steel plant engagement - Project duration and any previous related efforts 2. **Submission:** - Submit completed proposal as a Word document (no PDFs) to [lwharrey@aist.org](mailto:lwharrey@aist.org) by July 20, 2025 3. **Compliance:** - Agree to AIST Foundation’s policies, including antitrust, anti-harassment, and privacy requirements --- ## Additional Information - Projects must focus on safety and health awareness within the steel manufacturing industry. Example topics: safety management, personal protective equipment, industrial hygiene, technology, communications, machinery safety, etc. - Projects may include research, field investigations, internships, or other experiential learning. - At project completion, teams must submit a report and are encouraged to present outcomes at an AIST or SMA event (travel reimbursement available). - Awarded teams will be matched with a steel industry mentor; if no suitable mentor is found, the grant may be voided. - Multi-year projects are allowed (up to two years), but funding is evaluated annually. - All grants are subject to availability and AIST Foundation Board approval. --- ## External Links - [Don B.
