--- ## Description The Don B. Daily Safety Steel Intern Scholarship, established by the Steel Manufacturers Association and the AIST Foundation, aims to promote safety and industrial hygiene within the steel manufacturing sector. This award targets North American university students who are passionate about improving workplace safety. Recipients receive a paid summer internship at a North American steel-producing company or supplier, followed by a US$7,500 scholarship for one academic year. The program is designed to support and encourage the next generation of safety leaders in the steel industry. --- ## Due Dates - October 31, 2019: Application deadline for the 2020–2021 academic year - October 14, 2025: Application deadline for the 2026–2027 cycle *All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates.* --- ## Funding Amount - Up to two scholarships are awarded each cycle. - Each award consists of a paid summer internship at a North American steel company or supplier, plus a US$7,500 scholarship for one academic year. --- ## Eligibility - Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited North American university. - Must be majoring in safety or industrial hygiene. - Open to citizens of the USA, Canada, or Mexico. - Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. - Applicants must commit to a paid summer internship at a North American steel company or industry supplier. - Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. - Application, essay, and recommendation letter must demonstrate a strong interest in safety in the steel manufacturing industry. --- ## Application Process - Complete and submit the online application form by the deadline. - Required documents: - Current résumé (including work experience and extracurricular activities, noting leadership positions) - Essay (max two pages) describing professional goals, interest in industrial safety, and how skills can enhance the steel industry - At least one recommendation letter (maximum five), submitted directly by the author to the AIST Foundation Scholarship Committee ([lwharrey@aist.org](mailto:lwharrey@aist.org)) - Current academic transcript or other official documentation of academic standing - Applicants can express preferences for company and location for the internship; AIST will assist in placement. - If arranging their own internship, it must be pre-approved by AIST. - Recipients must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and receive a satisfactory internship performance review to remain eligible for the scholarship. - Applications are evaluated on steel industry interest (35%), grades (20%), recommendation letters (30%), and extracurricular activities (15%). --- ## Additional Information - Acceptance of an internship at a company not related to steel manufacturing, or rescinding an accepted offer, will disqualify the applicant. - The award is contingent on available funding and subject to AIST Foundation Board of Trustees approval. - Scholarship recipients are announced in December. --- ## External Links - [Don B.
