The Donald R. Coates Geomorphology Research Award, administered by the Quaternary Geology & Geomorphology Division of the Geological Society of America (GSA), provides annual support to outstanding graduate students (M.S. or Ph.D.) conducting research in Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology. The award specifically aims to recognize and support students from demographic communities currently underrepresented in the geosciences, including Black, Indigenous, Latinx/Hispanic, Asian or other Communities of Color, LGBTQI+ members, individuals with disabilities, and older students who have taken nontraditional paths to graduate school. Selection is based on research proposals submitted through the GSA Student Research Grant Program, and eligible candidates are identified from those who voluntarily provide demographic information during the application process.
