Summary: Supports translational research to accelerate promising ideas in military-related toxic exposure into clinical applications, with strong encouragement for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Key Information: Pre-application required; only invited applicants may submit full proposals.
This grant opportunity supports translational research focused on military-related toxic exposures. The goal is to move promising research findings into clinical applications, such as healthcare products, interventions, technologies, or clinical practice guidelines that benefit Service Members, Veterans, their Families, and the public. The program strongly encourages interdisciplinary partnerships, especially between clinicians and research scientists, via the Partnering Principal Investigator Option (PPIO). Projects must demonstrate integration of basic and clinical science and provide evidence of reciprocal knowledge transfer.
Research must address at least one of the FY26 Toxic Exposures Research Program (TERP) goals and at least one topic area, including but not limited to neurotoxin exposure, Gulf War Illness, airborne hazards/burn pits, and other military service-related toxic exposures (e.g., pesticides, groundwater contamination). Studies must be hypothesis-driven, relevant to military-related exposures, and have clear translational potential. Clinical trials are not permitted under this mechanism, though preclinical and clinical research (not trials) is allowed.
