Description
The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Remote Sensing Division in Washington, DC invites applications for postdoctoral research opportunities focused on ensemble aerosol forecasting. The research aims to advance the Navy’s aerosol prediction capabilities by developing and improving the Ensemble Navy Aerosol Analysis Prediction System (ENAAPS), a probabilistic aerosol forecasting system transitioning to operational use.
Research areas include:
- Ensemble Data Assimilation: Incorporating new observation types into ENAAPS to enhance aerosol vertical distribution, speciation, and coupling with meteorological parameters.
- Verification: Using NCAR’s METplus software to evaluate Navy and international aerosol model performance, develop metrics, improve visualization, and analyze aerosol vertical distribution with lidar and airborne datasets.
- Post-Processing: Applying machine learning and statistical methods to consolidate ensemble aerosol forecasts into actionable outcomes for decision-making.
This opportunity is a collaboration with NRL's Marine Meteorology Division in Monterey, CA, where a similar position is available for those interested in that location.
Candidates must have completed a PhD in atmospheric science, environmental engineering, or a closely related field before starting the postdoc. Programming experience in Python, Fortran, and Shell scripting is required. Prior experience with data assimilation and aerosol prediction is preferred. NRL provides access to high-performance computing resources to support research.
