The Equality Fund at the Boston Foundation is the largest philanthropic fund exclusively supporting the LGBTQ+ community in Massachusetts. Established in 2012, it provides general operating and program support grants to nonprofit organizations serving LGBTQ+ individuals and families, with a focus on Greater Boston. The Fund invests in research, advocacy, capacity building, community building, and direct services addressing urgent and emerging needs. Priority is given to programs serving the most marginalized groups within the LGBTQ+ community, including people of color (especially youth), transgender and gender expansive individuals, refugees and asylum seekers, aging adults, and those experiencing homelessness.
Grantmaking is guided by an Advisory Committee of community members and allies, prioritizing legal rights, safe schools, healthcare access, housing and economic stability, and organizational structural support.
