The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) Research Grants provide direct funding for high-quality, impactful research led by Society members. The programme covers basic, translational and clinical research, patient and family partnership, digital health and multidisciplinary care. Its goals include supporting intensive care research in Europe, implementing new techniques through research and training, and strengthening international collaboration within Europe and beyond.
The programme combines Society-funded grants with dedicated opportunities in less invasive respiratory support, medical nutrition, medical care sustainability and experimental research. Proposals must be multi-centre and multi-national in participation and focus, with involvement from low- and middle-income countries considered an advantage. In 2026, ESICM began transitioning to larger grants and harmonised eligibility criteria.
