Funding Amounts: No budget limit; project period up to 5 years (most projects 4 years or less); budgets must reflect actual needs.
Summary: Supports research on the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of human genetics and genomics, emphasizing diverse perspectives and stakeholder engagement.
Key Information: A Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP) is required; applications without a PEDP will not be reviewed.
This opportunity invites Research Project Grant (R01) applications to study the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of human genetics and genomics. Projects may use single or mixed methods, including empirical qualitative and quantitative research, as well as conceptual, legal, and normative analyses. Applied research addressing real-world ELSI issues in genomics is encouraged, and direct engagement with communities and stakeholders is welcomed but not required.
The program aims to address emerging and enduring ELSI questions arising from advances in genomics, such as those related to gene editing, data sharing, commercialization, and the impact of genomics on individuals and society. Multidisciplinary teams and diverse perspectives are strongly encouraged.
A required Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP) must be included in all applications.
