The Euratom Research and Training Programme funds collaborative research and skills development in nuclear safety, fusion, radiation protection, and innovation across Europe.
Funder: European Commission
Due Dates: Rolling (calls are announced via work programmes; next: 2026-2027 cycle)
Funding Amounts: €1.98 billion (2021–2027); €330 million for 2026–2027 (€222M fusion, €108M fission/safety/radiation); project budgets vary by call.
Summary: Supports research, innovation, and skills development in nuclear safety, security, radioactive waste, fusion energy, and radiation protection across Europe.
Key Information: Uses Horizon Europe rules; open to consortia in eligible countries; next major work programme covers 2026–2027.
The Euratom Research and Training Programme is the European Union’s primary funding instrument for advancing nuclear research, safety, and skills development. It complements Horizon Europe and covers both direct actions (carried out by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre) and indirect actions (collaborative research by external consortia). The programme addresses nuclear safety, security, radioactive waste management, spent fuel, radiation protection, fusion energy, and non-power applications of ionising radiation. It also places a strong emphasis on developing nuclear expertise, supporting education and training, and facilitating researcher mobility, notably through Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.
