--- ## Description The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) is a federal initiative designed to supplement the work of local social service organizations in the United States and its territories, both public and nonprofit, by providing emergency assistance to people in need. The program operates in over 2,500 local jurisdictions, funding approximately 10,000–12,000 local recipient organizations (LROs) through a network of Local Boards and State Set-Aside Committees. By statute, the program is governed by a National Board chaired by FEMA and comprised of representatives from six major national nonprofits: American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, The Jewish Federations of North America, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army, and United Way Worldwide. The National Board is responsible for setting program policies, determining funding allocations, and overseeing the distribution of federal funds to local communities.
