The Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program, launched by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), is designed to support exceptional basic researchers—including physician-scientists—who demonstrate strong potential to become leaders in their fields and to advance diversity and inclusion in science. Scholars are expected to prioritize scientific excellence in their research while fostering inclusive lab environments that serve as models within their institutions and beyond. The program also emphasizes professional development, leadership, and mentoring skills.
Scholars are appointed for an initial five-year term, with the possibility of renewal for a second five-year term following a successful progress evaluation. The program provides substantial, flexible funding to enable ambitious research and the creation of inclusive scientific communities.
Future competitions are anticipated every two years.
