This grant program provides annual formula funding to Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs) to support the preservation of historic properties on tribal lands, as outlined in the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The funding enables THPOs to carry out activities including survey, planning, technical assistance, physical preservation, review of federal undertakings, education, and the listing of properties in the National Register of Historic Places and Tribal Registers. The grants are designed to help tribes assume State Historic Preservation Office responsibilities, as agreed upon in their Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the National Park Service (NPS). All projects must comply with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation.
