This program funds the Rail Safety Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (Rail Safety IDEA), which seeks to identify and support promising, unproven concepts with the potential to advance the safety and performance of railroads in the United States. The program is administered by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and is intended to provide resources for the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to continue the Rail Safety IDEA program. Projects funded must be railroad-related and are expected to explore innovative concepts initiated by researchers, inventors, universities, or companies, both within and outside the traditional transportation research community.
