The NCTE George Orwell Award for Distinguished Contribution to Honesty and Clarity in Public Language, established in 1975 by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), recognizes an author, editor, or producer of a print or nonprint work that makes an exceptional contribution to honesty and clarity in public language. The award is administered by the NCTE Public Language Award Committee and aims to promote critical analysis of public discourse, fostering dialogue and understanding of the role of language in society. Works honored by this award prompt examination of pressing social, political, or educational issues and encourage public conversations about truth, honesty, and the power of language.
