Summary: Honors ACS members for exceptional volunteer public outreach that enhances public appreciation and understanding of chemistry.
The Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach, established by the American Chemical Society (ACS), recognizes outstanding volunteer achievements by ACS members who significantly improve public recognition and appreciation of chemistry. The award celebrates creativity, sustained effort, and impactful messaging in outreach activities that reach lay audiences—such as lectures, demonstrations, media appearances, and hands-on science events in public venues. The selection committee evaluates nominees based on their advocacy, involvement in outreach initiatives, development of resources, and overall impact on the public’s understanding of chemical science and its applications. The award is presented annually at the ChemLuminary Awards ceremony during the ACS fall meeting.
