Funder: European Commission
Due Dates: September 17, 2025
Funding Amounts: Total budget €11,000,000; typically two projects funded at approx. €5,500,000 each over 3–5 years.
Summary: Funds innovative projects to discover and sustainably produce high-value natural products from terrestrial ecosystems using advanced biotechnological and digital methods.
Key Information: Requires international consortia; strong focus on industry/SME involvement and demonstration activities.
This Horizon Europe Innovation Action supports projects that integrate bioprospecting, biotechnology, and biomanufacturing to unlock and optimize the production of biologically active natural compounds from terrestrial ecosystems. The scope includes using digital, 'omics', and bioinformatic tools to identify, characterize, and scale up high-value bioactive compounds for applications in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, food/feed additives, agrochemicals, and other bio-based sectors.
Projects must demonstrate advances in computational tools, commit to biodiversity conservation by enabling sustainable bioproduction routes, and foster stakeholder engagement to promote biotechnology and bio-based innovation. The action covers the full biodiscovery pipeline—from in silico prospecting and genomic characterization to bioactivity screening and optimized production via biotechnology or synthetic biology. Safety and sustainability assessments are required, and compliance with EU and international regulations on access and benefit-sharing of biological resources is mandatory. Projects should prioritize industry and SME involvement, demonstration activities, and international cooperation.
