Summary: Supports early mid-career artists and scholars with time and resources to pursue new independent work in rotating selected fields.
The George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation Fellowship, administered at Brown University, provides early mid-career artists and scholars with substantial support to pursue new creative or scholarly projects in selected disciplines. The fellowship is intended to give recipients the time and freedom to advance independent work, rather than to fund publication costs, equipment, exhibitions, or institutional programs. Each year, the Foundation rotates the eligible fields; for the 2026 cycle, these are Writing for Performance, Choreography, and Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies. Recipients may combine the fellowship with other support or sabbaticals, but this is not required. The program is highly competitive and designed to recognize individuals who have completed at least one major project and show promise as future leaders in their fields.
