Description
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Research invites applications for the Humanities Research Centers on Artificial Intelligence program. This grant supports the creation of new humanities research centers that focus on exploring the legal, ethical, or societal implications of developing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
A Center is defined as a sustained collaboration among multiple scholars who engage in at least two related scholarly activities such as workshops, lecture series, digital infrastructure development, curriculum creation, publications, or public outreach. The program encourages interdisciplinary collaboration but requires that the research questions be rooted in the humanities and led by humanists. Scholars may be from multiple institutions, including international collaborators, but U.S.-based scholars must have significant involvement.
This program is designed exclusively for establishing new centers; existing centers or institutes are not eligible. Each institution may submit only one application, with branch campuses considered separately.
The program is part of NEH’s broader Humanities Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence initiative, which promotes research on the ethical, legal, and societal impacts of AI.
