--- ## Description The Humans, Disasters, and the Built Environment (HDBE) program supported fundamental, multidisciplinary research examining the complex interactions between humans and the built environment in the context of natural, technological, and other hazards and disasters. The program emphasized research that integrates three core elements: community populations, the built environment (including infrastructure, buildings, and physical/virtual spaces), and the hazards/disasters to which communities are exposed. Projects funded under this program were expected to contribute to broad theoretical frameworks, develop innovative methods, and generate data with applicability across scales and conditions. Research topics included, but were not limited to, models that span non-hazard to extreme hazard scenarios, studies on how human-built environment interactions influence disaster risk, and the development of shared data resources. The program encouraged interdisciplinary approaches, especially those that challenge conventional wisdom and advance knowledge across engineering, social sciences, computing, and related fields.
