Summary: Supports integrative, cross-disciplinary research to elucidate the genomic mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) and enable precision genomic medicine approaches.

Key Information: This is a forecasted opportunity; applications are not yet being solicited.

    Description

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the NIH, intends to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to support integrative, cross-disciplinary research aimed at scaling up mechanistic studies to understand the genomic underpinnings of the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD).

Projects funded under this future opportunity are expected to:

    • Employ interdisciplinary approaches that integrate innovative techniques to dissect the genomic drivers of AD/ADRD.
    • Leverage advanced analytical methods such as machine learning, comparative genomic analysis across multiple genetic ancestries or neurodegenerative diseases, genome editing, functional characterization assays, and emerging single-cell and spatial omics technologies.
    • Utilize sophisticated disease models, including human stem cell-based systems, ex vivo and in vivo models, reflecting diverse genetic ancestries, various model organisms, or multiple neurodegenerative conditions.
    • Enable comprehensive investigation of genomic drivers of neurodegeneration and neuropathogenesis, with the ultimate goal of identifying actionable therapeutic targets and informing mechanism-driven precision medicine approaches for AD/ADRD.

This is a forecasted opportunity, intended to provide potential applicants with sufficient time to develop collaborations and responsive projects. The formal NOFO will use the U01 Cooperative Agreement mechanism.
