Description
This Department of Energy (DOE) program, administered by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) on behalf of the Grid Deployment Office, provides funding to facilitate the siting and permitting of high-voltage interstate or offshore electricity transmission lines, as well as to support economic development in communities affected by these projects. The program is funded under Section 50152 of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and aims to accelerate the construction of new or upgraded transmission infrastructure while ensuring that impacted communities benefit from economic opportunities and environmental justice initiatives.
There are two main areas of interest:
- Area 1: Siting and Permitting Activities — Funding for studies, analyses, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory participation to streamline and strengthen the siting and permitting process for covered transmission projects.
- Area 2: Economic Development Activities — Funding for projects that promote economic development in communities impacted by the construction or operation of covered transmission lines, including workforce development, local infrastructure, energy resilience, and more.
