Funder: Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
Due Dates: April 1, 2025 (PCORI Online Opens) | May 13, 2025 (LOI Deadline) | September 3, 2025 (Application Deadline)
Funding Amounts: Up to $12 million direct costs per project, maximum 5 years; total funds available up to $60 million.
Summary: Supports high-quality patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) focused on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, with emphasis on oral health, gastrointestinal health, and care delivery.
Key Information: Projects proposing novel interventions or new technology development are not responsive; strong patient and stakeholder engagement is required.
This funding opportunity from PCORI seeks to support high-quality, patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects that address the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across the lifespan. The focus is on comparing interventions—clinical or systems-based, pharmacological or non-pharmacological—that are relevant to individuals with IDD.
For the 2025 cycle, PCORI highlights three special areas of emphasis (SAEs): oral health, gastrointestinal health, and improving care delivery. While applications in these areas are encouraged, submissions are not limited to these topics. The goal is to generate evidence that addresses meaningful decisional dilemmas faced by patients, clinicians, and other stakeholders, ultimately improving patient-centered outcomes for people with IDD.
PCORI encourages the use of individual- or cluster-randomized controlled trials, but well-designed natural experiments and observational studies are also eligible. Projects should be designed to facilitate widespread uptake of findings, including hybrid effectiveness-implementation approaches.
Projects focused on the development of new interventions, new technologies (e.g., mobile apps), or decision support tools are not responsive to this call. Adaptations of existing, efficacious interventions for the IDD population are allowed if the adaptation is minimal and well-justified.
Key Application Resources:
Special Areas of Emphasis (SAEs):
Engagement Requirements: Applicants must address PCORI’s Foundational Expectations for Partnerships in Research.
Nonresponsive Projects: Proposals focused on developing new interventions, new technologies, or research methods are not eligible.
Patient Care Costs: May be included in the budget, but must be justified and are subject to PCORI approval.
