This fellowship, offered by the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Foundation in collaboration with the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery (JATS), is designed to provide young Japanese cardiothoracic surgeons with immersive exposure to advanced clinical techniques and integrated care systems in North America. Over a period of two to three months at top host institutions, fellows participate in interactive, observational experiences focused on both cardiac and thoracic specialties. The program emphasizes skill development in minimally invasive procedures, complex valve repairs, robotic surgery, multidisciplinary patient management, and innovative approaches to lung and heart surgery. Awardees benefit from mentorship by leading surgeons and gain insights to bring back to their home institutions in Japan.
