The José Esteban Muñoz First-Time Presentation Award, established by the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR), honors the legacy of José Esteban Muñoz, a leading scholar in performance studies, queer theory, and critical theory. The award aims to support scholars of color who are presenting at the ASTR annual conference for the first time. It recognizes the systemic barriers faced by minoritarian knowledge producers in academia and is designed to foster research by and about people of color, with a particular emphasis on intersectional work, including LGBTQIA2S+ and disability communities, as well as scholars lacking regularized institutional support. The award covers travel and hotel expenses and waives conference registration for recipients.
